I had the privilege of coordinating a transformative project with Manning Valley Neighbourhood Services (MVNS) focused on validating women’s experiences during the devastating 2019/20 Black Summer Bushfires. As a former Rural Fire Service (RFS) firefighter and community engagement facilitator, I approached this disaster from a unique perspective. However, this project gave me the opportunity to connect deeply with women whose lives were profoundly affected by the fires.
Facilitating Healing Through Story-Sharing Workshops
In March 2022, I led a series of story-sharing workshops where women affected by the Black Summer Bushfires began openly expressing their lived experiences. These sessions became spaces of connection where tears, laughter, stories, and healing were shared. Over time, I witnessed remarkable growth — confidence returned, new friendships formed, and resilience emerged.
Bringing Women’s Stories to Life on Film
Encouraged by the women’s progress, I proposed recording their stories to preserve their voices and experiences. With funding secured and a skilled videographer on board, we filmed over four days, completing just in time for a scheduled premiere on June 15th.
Despite some technical challenges, the screening was a powerful and emotional experience. When the film ended, silence filled the room — a testament to the impact and significance of these women’s shared journeys.
About the Project
This project was designed to validate and amplify women’s voices affected by the Black Summer Bushfires, supporting their recovery and community resilience. Sharing these stories helps not only those directly impacted but also raises awareness and understanding within the wider community.
