In Autumn 2019, I was engaged by Port Macquarie-Hastings Council to design and facilitate
Hands on History as part of the “Four Seasons in One Dementia Day” project, now featured
on the Dementia Australia website. This dementia-friendly initiative involved a series of
creative activities across four seasons. For my part, I borrowed historical clothing from the
Port Macquarie Museum and visited four heritage sites in the Hastings LGA, including the
Port Macquarie Courthouse, Wauchope Community Arts Hall, and a historic church in
Laurieton. Older adults dressed in period costumes and used iPads to photograph each
other at these sites. A selection of the photos was later exhibited at the Port Macquarie
Museum, where participants and guests were invited to celebrate the project’s success over
a delightful morning tea. The project fostered creativity, connection, and joy through shared
history and playful engagement.
